After seven years in the making, Colleen Thurston’s DROWNED LAND is premiering in Mexico. This documentary is a personal story about the continuing cycle of displacement of Indigenous peoples and the Kiamichi River, a vital water source that runs through the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma—and the passionate water protectors fighting for its future.

Drowned Land is a presentation of Vision Maker Media. The film was developed with the support of ITVS with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and produced with support from Ford Foundation, Firelight Media, Tulsa Artist Fellowship, Anonymous Was a Woman in partnership with The New York Foundation for the Arts, and a grant from the Sundance Institute Indigenous Program.
Drowned Land was selected for Elev8Docs - a yearlong marketing initiative powered by Color Congress that will test a range of marketing strategies for two dozen documentary films, all directed by filmmakers of color and nominated by member organizations. The film will be documented in a case study published in early 2026.
